New Jersey's Two U.S. Senators Once Again Ignore the Will of NJ Citizens

Tuesday, October 22, 2003---

NJRTL, the state's largest pro-life organization applauded the 64-34 vote taken last night by the U.S. Senate to send the Partial Birth Abortion Ban to the President for his signature. Marie Tasy, Public & Legislative Affairs Director for New Jersey Right to Life, commented on the "No" votes by both New Jersey's U.S. Senators Corzine and Lautenberg. "U.S. Senators Corzine and Lautenberg have repeatedly voted to keep this gruesome partial birth abortion procedure legal. Their refusal to listen to the will of NJ citizens on this important issue is shameful and reprehensible," said Tasy.
The bill defines partial birth abortion as delivery of a fetus "until, in the case of a head first presentation, the entire fetal head is outside the body of the mother, or, in the case of the breech presentation, any part of the fetal trunk past the navel is outside the body of the mother for the purpose of performing an overt act that the person knows will kill the partially delivered living fetus."
The partial birth abortion debate was changed in the United States when a September 15, 1996 Bergen Record broke the news from an interview that the Metropolitan Medical Center in Englewood, NJ performs 1500 Partial Birth Abortions a year. (4 times a day).
President Bush issued a statement yesterday from Singapore indicating he will sign the bill as soon as it reaches his desk. He said the legislation "will end an abhorrent practice and continue to build a culture of life in America." He said, "I look forward to signing it into law."
"Partial Birth Abortion is a cruel, horrific crime against innocent children and should never be tolerated in a civilized society," said Tasy. "We are proud to stand in solidarity with President Bush, the Congressional Majority, and the American people to call for an end to partial birth abortion."
"We are gratified to finally have a President in office who is willing to sign a bill that will put an end to this inhumane practice in America," said Tasy.?
