New Jersey Right to Life led the effort to pass the NJ Partial Birth Abortion Ban in 1997 as well as the override of NJ Governor Christine Todd Whitman's veto of the ban. Within hours of the Legislature's override of Governor Whitman's veto, Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey and three Abortion Providers filed suit in the U.S. District Court in Trenton to block the law pending a trial. The law was struck down by a U.S. District Court and was subsequently appealed by the NJ Legislature to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals where it was ruled unconstitutional following the 2000 U.S. Supreme Court Decision, Stenberg v. Carhart. NJRTL's Public & Legislative Affairs Director personally attended all the NJ court proceedings. Click on the links below to read the Court Opinions in the NJ Case.
