The Senate and Assembly Voted on two abortion bills on June 29, 2022. See below for Roll Call Votes. Governor Murphy signed these bills into law on Friday, July 1, 2022.
Pro-abortion groups say these bills will make NJ a Safe Haven for Abortion
What will these bills actually do?
The language in these bills is so broad that it will grant immunity protection to sex traffickers, sexual predators of minors and unscrupulous abortionists and others who travel to this state to obtain, procure, provide or facilitate an abortion. It will also shield abortion providers in NJ (which now include nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, advance practice nurses and physician assistants) from disciplinary actions for performing an abortion on a patient who travels from another state that protects the life of babies in the womb.
Once again, the public deliberately did not have sufficient notice to weigh in on the bills. NJRTL learned the bills were scheduled for a hearing the night before the hearing took place. NJRTL and several other pro-life leaders attended a 6 hour-long hearing before the Senate Judiciary to testify against these bills. One of the bills was gutted at the last minute which made it difficult for us to know what was actually still included in the bill. The bill passed out of Committee largely along party lines, with Democrat Senators voting to release it with the exception of Senator Fred Madden who voted No and all Republican Senators voted No or abstained. The bill was scheduled for a vote in both houses two days later on June 29, 2022.
